THE UNITED STATES & 4th JULY

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU

It was approved by Congress on July 4, 1776, but signed later by the delegates. It was drafted by a committee of five, led by Thomas Jefferson, but revised by others. It was influenced by the ideas of the Enlightenment and other historical documents.

The Declaration of Independence sparked a war that pitted the colonists against the British army and navy. The colonists were not united in their cause. Some of them remained loyal to Britain, while others switched sides during the war. They faced a formidable enemy that had a larger and better-equipped army and navy.

Some of the daring moves in the war include:

1. The Battle of Trenton (December 26, 1776): George Washington crossed the Delaware River at night and surprised the Hessian mercenaries in Trenton, New Jersey, capturing nearly 1,000 of them

The United States became a model and an inspiration for other countries that wanted to achieve their own freedom and democracy.

2. The Battle of Saratoga (September-October 1777): The Americans defeated a British invasion from Canada, led by General John Burgoyne, in a series of battles near Saratoga, New York. This was a turning point in the war, as it convinced France to join the American side

3. The Battle of Cowpens (January 17, 1781): Daniel Morgan used a clever tactic to lure Banastre Tarleton’s British cavalry into a trap at Cowpens, South Carolina. He used three lines of men to feign a retreat and then counterattack with his regulars. The British suffered heavy casualties and lost over 500 prisoners

4. The Siege of Yorktown (September-October 1781): The Americans and the French surrounded Lord Cornwallis’ army at Yorktown, Virginia, and bombarded them with artillery. Cornwallis surrendered on October 19, effectively ending the war

5. The war ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1783, which recognized the United States as a new and independent nation. This was a historic moment that changed the course of history.
The United States became a model and an inspiration for other countries that wanted to achieve their own freedom and democracy.
